Everest Three Passes(High Passes) Trekking and Island Peak Climbing
IntroductionEverest Three Passes(High Passes) Trekking and Island Peak Climbing is a popular trekking route with three passes: Renjo La Pass(5360m), Cho La Pass(5420m), and Kongma La Pass(5535m) that includes climbing of Island Peak, officially known as Imja Tse(6189m) in the Everest Region.

Route detail: Everest Three Passes(High Passes) Trekking and Island Peak Climbing starts with a flight to Lukla, from where travelers hike to Namche, then moving ahead to  Khumjung and Khunde. Traversing into Thame, Lungden, Renjo La Pass and Gokyo and Gokyo Ri, the trail moves through Ngozumba Glacier en route to Thangnak, Cho La Pass , Dzongla, Lobuche, and Gorak Sep followed by visit to Everest Base Camp. Thereafter the trail leads us to Kongma La Pass following Chhukung, from where the trail leads us on a hiking up to Island Peak Base Camp and  Island Peak High Camp to climb Island Peak.

Insight into three Passes
Renjo La pass (First Pass) - Renjo La Pass(5360m) is an adventurous high pass on the way to Gokyo Lakes, which is the best viewpoint for panoramic himalayan landscape and mountains like Everest(8848m), Makalu(8485m) and Cho Oyu(8201m).


Cho La Pass (Second Pass) Cho La Pass(5420m) is a high pass en route to Everest Base Camp from Gokyo Valley. Rated as adventurous point, it offers stunning view of Thamserku(6623m), Cho Oyu(8201), Pumori (7161m), Nuptse(7861m), and Lhotse(8516m).

Kongma La Pass (Third Pass) Kongma La Pass(5535m) en route to Island Peak(Imja Tse), above Khumbu Glacier. It offers moutain views. Even smaller mountain peaks including stunning view of Khumbu Glacier can be viewed from here.

Introduction of Island Peak(Imja Tse) climbing
Island Peak recieved its name from the fact it looks like an Island from Chhukung. Situated at 6189m, this peak is suitable for all novice climbers for revitalization and fitness. At the Base Camp a short climbing training is carried out to boost the confidence of climbers. It is one of the most popular climbing peaks in Khumbu region.

Namche- Namche (3440m) is famously known as the Gateway to Everest Region, which is also a well settled Sherpa town inhabited by Sherpa people in majority. Luxury hotels and lodges facilitate travelers here. Namche is reputed business hub whose average temperature fluctuates around 6.1o Celsius.

Gokyo/Gokyo Ri  -Gokyo(4750m) is famous for turquoise Gokyo Lakes whereas Gokyo Ri (5357m) is a popular viewpoint for mountains and peaks. Ngozumba Glacier and Gokyo Valley from Goyo Ri looks breath-taking. The view of the Himalayas including Mt. Everest from Gokyo Ri is phenomenal.

EBC(Everest Base Camp)  -Everest Base Camp(5545m) gives the indescribable sense of being in the courtyard of Mount Everest(8848m), the top of the world. This is iconic as the Everest Expedition starts from here. Around 45 to 50 thousands of the world over travelers visit it annually. The temperature ranges between 10 to 20 degree Celsius.

Kala Patthar  -Kala Patthar (5644m) is a notable landmark located on the South ridge of Pumori. It is especially renown as a perfect viewpoint for the best close up view of Mt. Everest includeing other eight-thousanders and peaks and Khumbu icefall in Everest Region.

Tenbgoche -Tengboche is a beautiful Sherpa settlement where famous Tengboche monastery stands with Ama Dablam at its backdrop. It is a midway point to the Everest and a good viewpoint for mountains and peaks.

Essential Information
Island Peak Climbing Permit Fee
Island Peak (6061m) is situated in the Everest Region of Nepal. Nepal Mountaineering Association has brought into effect Island Peak Climbing from Chhukung Permit Fee which is as follows:

  • Spring ( June, July, August)– USD$250
  • Autumn (September, October, November)– USD$125
  • Winter (December, January, February)– USD$70
  • Summer(June, July, August)– USD$70

The permit fees for Spring and Autumn are comparatively higher than they are in Summer and Winter, which is because Spring and Autumn are the best times as they are not too cold, offer clear weather, thereby offer the highest chances of successful climbing of the peak.
In addition, each traveler has to pay Rs.3390 for Sagarmatha National Park Entry Fee and Rs.2000 for Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee.

Trekking/Climbing Cost- USD $2840.

Fitness Level - Island Peak is PD+ graded trekking peak which means the peak is mild in nature with regards to difficulty. Novices as well as professionals need to have certain level of fitness. It is obviously not for excessively obese people.

Clothing- Bring fleece jacket, down jacket, synthetic or wool socks, sun-shielding hat or cap, altitude gloves or mittens, and altitude boots. Travelers need to make sure their clothes should keep out the cold.

Climate/ Weather -During winter, the temperature drops to sub-zero. The summit of the Island Peak has -5oC to -10oC. The daytime temperature ranges from 0oC to 15oC.

Best Season -The best season for climbing Island Peak is Autumn (September, October and November ) and Spring (Marh, April and May). Other times than these are either too overcast or excessively cold, causing impediments.

Sagarmatha National Park
Sagarmatha National Park (1148km2) encapsulates all the trekking destinations in the Everest Region. It is also a single storehouse for rarest of the flora and fauna. Enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979 with a prime objective of preserving culture, flora, fauna and wildlife along with natural heritage in the Everest Region.
